This book ranks second on my all-time favorite list. Shards of Honor is why I became interested in Ms. Bujold's work, and why I rank her my favorite SF author. A small survey landing party is attacked without warning, killing all but two of its members. Cordelia Naismith, the captain of the survey team finds herself having to care for the other survivor, Ensign Dubauer, who has suffered neurological damage. Her transport has fled, leaving her alone to face the infamous "Butcher of Komarr", Aral Vorkosigan. But he too is seemingly alone -- having had an attempt made on his life by members of his own crew. The two of them are forced to rely upon each other, first, to get to a hidden stockpile of supplies, and, later, to discover the ringleaders of the mutiny and to overpower them when they seem to have the upper hand. This is a fast-paced story, with numerous twists and turns. You never seem to know what's going to happen next. As the story unfolds, Naismith and Vorkosigan find themselves doing the unthinkable -- falling in love with the enemy. Shards of Honor is an excellent story, told by an excellent (and award-winning) author. If you've heard about the Miles Vorkosigan series, you MUST read Shards of Honor first. Rating (out of 100): 98 Why? Because nothing is perfect, but this novel is just about as close as you'll find. | |
