Title: Luna Marine: Book Two of the Heritage Trilogy Author: Ian Douglas Publisher: Avon/EOS Year: 1999 ISBN: 0380788292 Description: 402 pages |
The story picks up four months after Book One (Semper Mars) ends. The United States has taken full control of Mars and of the International Space Station. The UN has a presence on the Moon, and appears to have made an amazing discovery, along the lines of the one at Cydonia Mars. On Earth, news of the discoveries found at Cydonia are producing upheavals amongst the population of the United States (and we can assume) amongst the people of the UN member countries. Bizarre religious cults, along with "ancient astronaut" beliefs have sprung up, and are disrupting an already difficult situation in the United States. The war is continuing, conventional weapons only, -- Japan has resigned from the United Nations and has joined the United States and Russia in fighting the fanatical tyranny that certain members of the UN elite are trying to impose. In North America, the independent state of Quebec has declared itself neutral in the war after suffering heavy losses at the beginning of the conflict. In the south, the United States has managed to beat back the combined armies of Mexico, Cuba and South America. In Siberia, Russia, along with US forces are fighting a losing battle against an army of Chinese and Manchurians. Discoveries made by UN archaeologists on the Moon threaten to upset the balance of power. And, in order to bring about a swift end to the conflict (and complete capitulation of the United States), the technocrats running the United Nations Security Council, decide to do the unthinkable -- to drop an asteroid onto the United States, killing tens of millions of people. Once again, the marines are called to save the day, this time with Mark Garroway's daughter, Kaitlin, leading the way. Charged with re-taking the farside base at Tsiolkovsky, and seizing the super-weapon that the UN scientists have found on the Moon, the Marines head into action -- outnumbered and outgunned once again. Failure will mean the imminent destruction of America, and of freedom in the world. Score: 87 out of 100. Even better than the first book in the series, Luna Marine is non-stop action and excitement. This book will be nigh-on impossible to put down. I can't wait for the last installment of this trilogy. | |
