In a dark future dominated by corporate city-states, a new breed of human has been developed to serve the corporate masters. These "mimes" possess metamorphic DNA -- DNA that can change the mimes into perfect genetic replicas of real people. The mimes are owned by the corporations, and are used to perform acts of corporate espionage, terrorism and murder. All mimes have but one dream -- to earn Selfhood and freedom from their corporate masters.

Tristan is one such mime, working for his corporate masters, living in a corporate hive, without freedom, privacy or dignity. Suddenly, his handler orders him to go on a certain mission -- to infiltrate a competitors headquarters and steal top-secret data that will catapult his corporation into a newer, more powerful position. While Tristan, like all mimes, has no right to refuse, his handler offers Tristan the one thing that he desires most -- Selfhood. After a strange rendezvous in a crime-ridden, lawless "outside world", Tristan successfully enters the inner data sanctum of Flagge Corp. by miming Lani Rouge, a Flagge datameister. But, for some reason, he orders his accomplices to not kill her. There's something about her, and her reaction to his mimed character that sets off subconcious alarms in his mind. Something appears not quite right.

In order to escape Flagge's "glom", he ends up having to win the assistance of Lani, the person he mimed, and to make contact with a group of renegade mimes. Only with their help, and the help of their mysterious leader Okasan, can Tristan hope to make it back to Kaze Corp. with his prize. But was his escape a little too easy? And why does Proteus, the group of renegade mimes, want to stop him reaching his masters and achieving Selfhood? There's much more going on than meets the eye.

Rating: 84 out of 100. An interesting story that doesn't let you go.
